Creating a link to a file

Hello everyone

I have been using Forever Notes for some time now and I really like it.

Since I have many documents to archive, I tried to find a solution that would allow me to insert the link to the document without uploading the document to Notes 8 (thus leaving the document in the cloud, so that it can be reached from all devices).

Has anyone already tried and found the solution?

Rosario - tr4jan is right for the way you link documents to notes that works on iOS and macOS.

if you only use documents that connect on your Mac, then you could use that app - Hookmark. I have found that to be the best way to link documents.

For any document that I might use with iOS, then I will use the share/collab/link method discussed above.

Hi Rosario,

I kinda recall an option to create a link to a file in icloud via the share function.

Choose a file,
open it’s context menu (long press),
share,
change „Send copy“ to „collaborate“,
choose „invite with link“,
adress to yourself (obligatory for activating the „share link button),
as soon as you press „Share link“ the doclink shall be copied to the clipboard and can be pasted in e.g. a note.

It’s been a while, you could try if that’s still feasible. I think the procedure via Mac was a bit easier.

I do not link docs to notes as this is just too cumbersome to me. At the end of all days, Apple Notes is just a note app.

tr4jan Thanks! I tried your suggestion and it works fine. Of course it doesn't open the found file, but waiting for news from Note, for now it's fine.

In addition, sharing a file from OneDrive is also possible. It also provides a link to the file, and you can set who can access the file and for how long. Should work the same, and provide a link to paste into your note too.

I use DevonThink ( https://www.devontechnologies.com) for my main MAC file storage app. It stores just about anything. Any item stored in DT can have a link that can be pasted into an Apple Note. Further, Devonthink can also index any MAC finder folder thus creating links to MAC files. Changes to items in the finder folder are automatically reflected in DT and thus Notes. Folders themselves can have links as well. Devonthink is complex so YMMV and it is $$ but it offers a lot of features and a solution to your 'link to file' issue. I don' use it but it can also index your Apple Mail so links to emails in Notes should be possible.

PaTalty Good to know! I used DevonThink for many years. Great developer and user support community. I used the folder indexing feature but never took full advantage of its advanced search capabilities. Stopped using it when I got the iPad. Kind of miss it. Have they done more to sync with iPhone and iPad?

tvillemw Sync is pretty solid now. It has constanty improved over the years. It is nice to use ForeverNotes with links into my Devonthink To Go app on iOS and iPadOS.

tvillemw I considered it. However, I found Notes syncing between my Mac iPad and iPhone near real time using Apple Notes. . That would not be the case with Devon think.

I find the ‘>>’ note creation and linking very powerful in Notes. Devonthink would be much more manual.

I recently released Foldie Links for creating links to local and iCloud files. Runs on iPad, iPhone, and Mac.Just bookmark a folder and create relative links to files within the folder. No need to create a collaboration link.

Please give it a try and tell me your opinion.

An interesting one..

i was attracted by the „Just bookmark a folder and create relative links to files within the folder. No need to create a collaboration link.“, but failed to find the expected simplicity.

My first contact with the app:

i uninstalled it after 4 minutes fiddling around, kinda unsuccessful in attempting to convert sth of the plethora of text into a simple working link. 😂

Admittedly i‘m not into the links business and def. do not want to make a degree in it. I would be down for kinda apple-like two clicks, one long press somewhere for a context menu and another press for “Link to”.

I‘m sure the app is great though and I‘m (still) keen to hear from others about it.

@CatarinaDK Got sidetracked. Tried the shortcut on macOS and still get the same result that the URL resuts in a 404. Would be awesome to fork the shortcut logic to handle the link based on OS differently so that it would be a universal solution.

tangible_life Then I don't know - here it takes a iCloud pdf and make it a shorten url to clipboard, that ai then can copy into a note.

CatarinaDK I found the issue... it's failing when the filenames have spaces. I'll work on this. I realized that my test file on iOS didn't have a space, and that my macOS test did and the space was where the parsed value broke the rich text formatting for the link result.
