Can you guys remind me why I’m doing this?

I was an early adopter of Forever Notes and it really jumped out at me. I spent a long time setting up the system.

Lately, I’ve been having an existential crisis with the framework. Why am I spending all this time linking and tagging notes when I can just drop them in a folder and move on with my life? Why am I spending all this time creating journal pages that link to years, months, etc. when I can just open a new note and journal throughout the day?

The system seems really high maintenance and I’m wondering if it is really worth it at the end of the day.

I’m glad you’re asking and I totally get this — but maybe the question isn’t “why does this take time” — it’s why am I putting this note here in the first place?

A big part of the framework is to engage consciously with your notes instead of just hoarding them. Adding a tag should actually be easier than moving it into a folder and more flexible as it can live in more than one folder. And once you’ve set up your ✱ Journal, it really shouldn’t need ongoing maintenance — it should just be there to catch your thoughts as you go.

Maybe it’s more about finding the right balance for your style? Maybe tell us more about your setup? Maybe it needs simplification.

I understand your point and don't think all the elements are useful either, which is why I don't use all of them. I'm not convinced either it e.g. makes sense to simulate something like parts of the calendar in a notes app (which is only feasible anyway if you only use the calendar marginally).

If you have a functional DMS, you don't need F✱N. That's why I advise everyone to identify their needs first and only consider switching to the F✱N approach if there are deficits.

The F✱N approach is a wonderful concept for anyone who doesn't have a functional DMS though.

Curious -what can take long time with setting up F✱N?
